SEM-Increasing Search Engine Visibility

SEM, or search engine marketing, is a way to drive traffic to your company’s website.  It does this by calling upon several different methods, including paid advertisements.  There are also more cost-effective ways to appear higher on a search engine’s list.  Unfortunately, this takes a lot of work and know-how and many people who want to utilize this method simply give up when they cannot figure out where to begin.  However, once you do some research and learn a little bit about what helps and what hinders, you can be well on your way to having a highly ranked website.

Simply put, a webpage that appears higher on a search engine’s results page increases visibility tremendously.  The internet is all about getting information quickly.  When someone types a keyword into Google, they often don’t look beyond the first four or five results.  Many people assume that the further down a webpage is, the less relevant it is.  However, this is not always the true.  The pages that come up further down the line might simply not have utilized SEM to their benefit.  Because of this, these websites often go unvisited and unnoticed, ultimately hurting their profits.

As marketing your website to increase its ranking can be confusing, it is sometimes a good idea to start with a paid advertisement either on the search engine itself or on another site.  The main reason for doing this is that your webpage comes up even before the general search results, or is set off to the side a bit, thus distinguishing it from the crowd.  Our eyes naturally go to these areas of the page on which paid spaces are strategically placed.  For this reason alone, this is definitely an SEM technique worth considering.

Another paid option is called pay-per-click.  These are advertisements that are placed on another website.  The reason that this is so effective is that you can choose to run an ad on a website that already has a high ranking and lots of traffic.  By having visibility on a popular site, you benefit from their marketing efforts and their pre-made audience.  It is an easy way to reach a lot of people that would otherwise pass over your webpage.  Also, by strategically choosing to place your ad on a related website you are reaching not only a large, but a very targeted, audience as well.  While there are a few no-cost ways to boost search engine rank, starting with a few paid spots is the best SEM technique to increase visibility.
